Course Description

The purpose of this introductory linguistics (and core English major course)is to provide an introduction into the nature and structure of human language with an emphasis on the English language. First, we will gain a foundation in the structural properties of language, including the phonology (sound system), morphology (word categories and structure), syntax (structure phrases), semantics (study of meaning), and pragmatics (the effect of context on meaning); then, we will apply this structural knowledge of language into other areas, including language change, language variation, child language acquisition, and second language learning.
